The events of this important day started as we gathered in the Schlosshof courtyard to drive to Stromberg for the civil marriage ceremony.
There was an official translator for John's benefit. As one of the two witnesses, he needed to understand what was being said - and that meant that the rest of us from the States would also hear the ceremony in English. While it served a specific purpose under German law, the ceremony was also completely charming.
As the ceremony ended, so did the rain,
providing an opportunity for lots of pictures.

After the ceremony, we all drove back to Waldlaubersheim for a memorable lunch
at another of the wineries in the village, Weingut Paulus.
And then it was time to get ready for the Polterabend - something like an outdoor "Open House" where anyone who wants to wish the couple good luck comes with something ceramic to throw on the ground.
The party went on all night, while the pile of good wishes grew.

After throwing our pottery, the family from the States relaxed and enjoyed the party.
Food and drink were abundant, and so were good friends.

Later, both Carmen's dance group and Erika's, below, performed in the courtyard.

While Andy walked with us back to our rooms, he noticed this message posted that day on the local bulletin board near the entrance to the Schlosshof courtyard.
The men of the Oberzunft, descended from the Guilds of the Middle Ages, posted this message of congratulations - to the meeting of Wine Royalty and California Dream Boy.
Seeing Andy's appreciation for this message from his Waldlaubersheim community was a special way to end this special day.
