Pars pro Toto

Science and Engineering Quad, Stanford University

Installed in April, 2021, this remarkable work consists of 12 stone spheres of varying sizes positioned on the courtyard of Stanford University's Science and Engineering Quad. Each sphere consists of natural stone formed over eons of geologic history. In her statement about this work, the artist, Alicja Kwade, said: "True to the meaning of the Latin phrase pars pro toto – “a part for the whole” – the stones individually and collectively evoke the micro and macro scales of our existence."
