It was the first day of the 2013 crab season on the California coast.
Three friends were out to get their share (or at least the legal limit).
From the water
Don was the first to own a kayak, but after Mike bought a Hobie Mirage Adventure Island (opens in a separate tab or window), Don decided to upgrade. Both Don and Mike, photos right, are in their souped-up Mirage AI's, loaded for crab.
Pete, the one holding the empty crab trap at the top of this page, had borrowed a kayak, but later decided to get his own - another Mirage AI. They now are a NASA armada.
The trio spent several hours on the water before heading back for a crab feast at Pete's home. They DID manage to catch very near their limit, and brought back plenty of crab for dinner that night.
The picture below shows Mike's secret advantage - it's a "fish finder", a sonar device that displays whether anything is moving underneath the surface. If you ask me, that's an unfair advantage.
To the land
It takes a trio. . . below from left to right, Pete, Don and Mike are preparing the catch in Pete's back yard. A large pot had been hooked up to steam the crab. There were eight for dinner, and enough crab for us all to take some home!
Pete lives near the coast, and we relaxed on his back porch until it was time to eat. Also in Pete's yard is the famous "Tiki Hut", below right, which figured in a different story [see Blade Runner photo, opens in a separate tab or window].
We all enjoyed a beautiful evening with great food and friends.
