On August 14, 2013, I visited the Monterey Bay area with my friend Rosalva Pleins, a soon-to-be 7th grader who is planning to be a marine biologist. We were invited by Judy Thompson, the administrator of the Hopkins Marine Station, a unit of the Biology Department of Stanford University.

After showing us around Hopkins, Judy hosted the two of us for lunch inside the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and gave us passes for the afternoon. After exploring the aquarium, we returned to Hopkins for a closer look at the beach and to take some pictures. Rosalva used my iPhone, while I experimented with a new camera.

Here are three sets of photos from that afternoon:

About Hopkins

The Hopkins Marine Station was established by Stanford University in 1892 as the first marine laboratory on the west coast of North America. The modern laboratory facilities on the 11-acre campus on Cabrillo Point offer undergraduate and graduate courses on topics including oceanography, environmental and comparative physiology, molecular evolution, biomechanics, cellular biology, conservation biology, and neurobiology and behavior.

About the Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Monterey Bay Aquarium, down the street from Hopkins, houses numerous exhibits that showcase marine life and inspire an appreciation for, and a desire to protect, the oceans. It was founded as a nonprofit organization in 1984, and welcomes almost 2 million visitors annually.
