These little fellows greeted us as we checked into our motel in Tehachapi, California, on New Year's Eve, 2013. By that time, our Christmas road trip was almost over. We'd driven almost 5500 miles, taking the northern route east across the mountains and plains, and returning via the southwest. In between, we celebrated a beautiful Christmas with family in Ohio.
